DESCRIPTION:This course provides an introduction to the industrial automation process.  It introduces the concept of the closed loop systems and explains the role and function of each component in the system.   Topics covered include: Manipulated variable\, controlled variable\, set point\, comparator\, reference input\, on/off control\, proportional control\, integral and derivative control.   Students who do not have a background in automation should take this course before taking subsequent courses in the series such as electromechanical devices\, Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)\, Introduction to Hydraulics or Introduction to Pneumatics. A knowledge of alternating current and direct current fundamentals is required.
