The Bell County Museum has scheduled the popular evening walking tour of Belton's downtown National Historic District, which will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010, and Thursday, June 24, 2010. The tour is based on the self-guided walking tour produced by the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee. Many aspects of Belton and Bell County's rich history are covered in this event, which should last just over one hour. Topics include shoot-outs along Central Avenue, the 1874 vigilante massacre of Bell County prisoners, a 19th-century female commune, and much more. Bell County Museum Director Stephanie Turnham will lead the tour. "Everyone really seems to enjoy this leisurely stroll through the county's past. And it is always interesting when people who grew up here add their personal stories to the narrative," she said. The walking tour is recommended for adults. Participants will meet on the north side of the Bell County Courthouse.
