Description

On Thursday, January 30th, Berneta Peeples of Belton will be recognized with the Yellow Rose of Texas Award. The distinction is truly fitting for Ms. Peeples, as the award is given to women who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer and community service.

After her illustrious career, which traces its roots back to her time at Belton High School when, as a freshman, she began visiting The Belton Journal before working on Saturdays as a high school senior, Berneta Peeples will retire at the age of 96. As the unofficial historian of Belton, Ms. Peeples possesses a wealth of knowledge about the central Texas town she has called home since she was 8-years-old.

Since 1934, the year Berneta began visiting the office of The Belton Journal, the city, state, and nation have seen great changes. Throughout that time, though, the citizens of Belton have had the privilege of reading Ms. Peeples' articles. As a testament to the longevity of her career, Ms. Peeples is believed to be the only active journalist to have interviewed a Civil War veteran.

Berneta Peeples will be honored at the offices of The Belton Journal (210 N. Penelope St.) as we celebrate her storied career in journalism. We're incredibly proud to be able to call Berneta Peeples a constituent and, now, a Yellow Rose of Texas.
